Nespresso firmly believes that a cup of coffee shouldn’t just taste great; it should also make you feel great. That’s why the promise of a perfect cup begins with the highest quality beans, which are sustainably sourced from around the globe, and where only one to two per cent of the world’s coffee output meets its exacting standards.
“Sustainability is not new to Nespresso,” explains Eliz Tan, senior brand manager of Nespresso Singapore. “Our unique coffee sourcing approach, the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Programme, in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance, was launched in 2003. It was specifically developed to secure the highest quality coffee in the world, while building a future for partner farmers based on long-term profitability, enhanced environmental and social outcomes, and genuine sustainability.”
To preserve its quality, freshly ground Nespresso Grand Cru coffee is hermetically sealed in aluminium capsules, the best material for shielding the delicate flavours and aromas of the coffee against oxidation, light and humidity. Aluminium is used for its lightweight properties; it’s also infinitely recyclable, which translates to environmental savings. When recycled, its environmental benefits are staggering. In fact, an estimated 75 per cent of aluminium produced is still in use today.
In Singapore, Nespresso has established its own recycling network to collect used capsules. The capsules are sun-dried and separated into aluminium and coffee grounds. The used coffee grounds are sent to Quan Fa Organic Farm for use in compost. They improve the drainage, water retention and aeration in the soil, and act as a natural pest repellent, keeping slugs and snails away from crops. Finally, the aluminium capsules, which are recyclable, are melted and used in products such as bicycles or window frames.
Called One Pod at a Time, the local outreach programme launched last year reminds customers that even if they just recycle a single pod, they are doing their part for the environment. Recycling used capsules is as easy as tapping in and out. Used capsules can be dropped off at any of the three Nespresso boutiques, or through the Recycling@Home network by passing them to the deliveryman at your next coffee order.

Consumer participation is essential for Nespresso’s recycling efforts to be truly successful. “Every small action counts to play a vital role in sustainability, and collectively our daily efforts have significant results,” says Tan. So remember, your Nespresso moment shouldn’t end at the bottom of each cup but when you recycle your used capsules. We can make a difference, one pod at a time.
