Classic Japanese fare without the fireworks and the overworked plating of modern, swish restaurants.
What to order?
Order the classic staples here, and you’ll never go wrong. The acclaimed teppanyaki at Shima does not disappoint. The pan-fried scallops, seared in butter and garlic, comes across juicily fresh and richly aromatic. The large chunks of king prawn is just as delicious having been quick fried and tossed in sweet and tart mayonnaise. When it comes to sashimi, the chef’s choice is excellent, with the freshest of fish and scallops artfully presented on a large half clam shell. The chef’s selection of sushi is also beautifully and elegantly presented, with a selection of salmon, tuna, salmon roe, caviar and egg toppings. Overall, the meal is clean, unfussy and features the beautiful natural flavours of fresh ingredients in their prime, which is the essence of Japanese dining. The wine selection is unsurprisingly limited, as the drink list is more heavily focused on sakes and hard liquor.
