The restaurant occupies two levels and is situated in a stately heritage building in the heart of the city. Indoor tables seat approximately 200 diners, with the al fresco terrace accommodating 40 persons alongside the Singapore River where the cityscape and water traffic are an added attraction.
The restaurant’s heritage signatures are Singapore favourites, found on the a la carte menu and possibly on the buffet at different times. Town laksa, a spicy noodle dish, provides a pleasing balance of spice and coconut milk in its curry gravy, including fragrant laksa leaves. A national icon, the chicken rice appeals to visitors and locals alike with its fragrant steamed rice and de-boned, gently simmered chicken pieces. The whole dish is completed with soup and sauces of chilli, ginger and soya. Mee goreng, another signature dish, combines spicy fried yellow noodles with vegetables, prawns and other seafood.
Also on the a la carte menu are Japanese and Italian delights, seafood classics, grilled steaks, plus all-day breakfast. Buffet counters, some with action-stations, encompass ‘toss your own’ Caesar salad and delicious smoked salmon. The accompaniments are freshly shucked oysters and seafood on ice, a selection of sushi, sashimi, salads with nutritious condiments, and a soup kettle.
The popular Indian station offers curries with bread, while the salmon enclosed in golden pastry at the carving station is a good choice. Try Chinese dim sum, roast duck, chicken rice, laksa, as well as Italian pasta with various sauces. Colourful desserts include bread-and-butter pudding, cakes, ice cream and a chocolate fountain.
The wine list of Old and New World labels provides a decent selection by the glass.
Attentive staff make diners comfortable, taking the initiative to assist with special requests and advising on the spiciness of relevant dishes.
